Overseas Qualified Nurses Registration Process
Australian State Nursing Boards (VIC, NSW, TAS, QLD,WA, SA) requires that each candidate:
- MUST have a qualification which is deemed equivalent to the qualification recognized by that state nursing board with similar competencies which are required for registration in that particular state nursing board ;
- MUST have highly competent English;
- MUST be of good character in the country of current practice;
- MUST be competent to practice as a nurse;
- MUST provide detailed work experience
- MUST provide proof of identity (passport etc)
- MUST pay the prescribed fee.
Options to study Nursing
For overseas Registered Nurses:
This course is specially designed for the nurses who:
- Are permanent residents of Australia or have a current visa to undertake this course ;
- Are overseas qualified nurses or nurses previously registered in Australia; and
- Have obtained registration approval from the State Nurses Board in Australia (eg Nursing Board of Victoria or Queensland Nursing Council etc)
The duration of the course can vary between 3 – 4 months depending upon the course provider (eg a university) which would cover “Academic” and “Clinical” programs
Post Registration for Overseas Nurses(Bachelor Degree):
This course is for domestic and overseas qualified registered nurses, who hold:
- a professional nursing qualification of 3 - 3.5 year duration,
- current registration in their country
To be eligible to apply for this course, applicants MUST:
- Hold a three (3) years course (diploma or certificate) or equivalent in Nursing to be registered as a nurse;
- Be currently registered as a Division 1 nurse in Australia or its equivalent as a registered nurse in their country;
- Provide proof of at least one year post-registration work experience and
- Meet English Language proficiency requirements as set out by the course provider (university)
The duration of the course can vary between 1-2 years depending upon the course provider (eg a university) which would cover “Academic” and “Clinical” programs
This program does not lead to automatic registration with the Nurses Board, you will have to meet the Nurses Board specific requirements to get registered.
Bachelor of Nursing:
The Bachelor of Nursing program gives you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in nursing.
Requirements:
- Year 12 with a minimum of 2 subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Health Education, Psychology or Physics)
- IELTS (Academic) overall score of 6.5, with each band not less than 6.0.
- Evidence of a current immunization record
