NMBA- English Language Skills Registration Standard 11th Nov 2010

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has released for consultation a revised English Language Skills Registration Standard for the nursing and midwifery professions.

The core difference in the revised standard is the removal of requirement about the secondary education be completed in English.

The NMBA is considering that
an applicant who was taught and assessed in his or her tertiary, entry to practice nursing
and/or midwifery education in English in the countries listed here:
 Australia
 Canada
 New Zealand

Bachelor of Nursing (Post Reg.) - Available 15th JULY 2011

University of Ballarat (UB) in conjunction with Australian Academy of Nursing (AAoN) is delivering ‘Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration)’ program for overseas qualified nurses at their campus in Dandenong, Victoria.

Limited places are approved by the VRQA (Victorian Registration & Qualification Authority) for the delivery of this program at the Dandenong campus. The places are filling FAST and less than 10 places are available for the overseas qualified nurses.

Australia’s Skilled Migration Program - JULY 2011

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will introduce a new Points Test for Australia’s Skilled Migration Program from 1 July 2011.

Significant changes are:

•the introduction of bonus points for applicants aged 25 – 32 years
•an increase in required English language levels
•emphasis on skilled work experience

NEW ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS REVISED 18th AUG 2010- NMBA

Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has revised the English Language requirements for the applicants applying for registration as a Registered Nurse (RN). These new requirements are explained in the list of FAQ’s which are published on the NMBA website.

This is a great relief for the overseas students who are currently studying in Australian universities for their tertiary qualifications in nursing, had previously completed their secondary education in English medium and can provide the satisfactory evidence confirming their secondary education.

About 200 students, mainly from Deakin ,Ballarat and Australian Catholic universities, gathered in front of the Victorian Parliament yesterday seeking a compromise on registration criteria.

Accredited Courses for Nurses 1st July 2010

‘All currently approved programs will continue to be approved by the Board under section 283 of the National Law. There will be a two-year lead-time for implementation of the accreditation standards for approved education programs leading to qualifications in nursing and midwifery.

English language skills registration standard for Overseas qualified Nurses

An internationally qualified applicant or an applicant who did not undertake and complete their secondary education to the requisite level required for entry into a nursing or midwifery program, taught and assessed in English must demonstrate that they have the necessary English language skills for registration purposes by achieving the required minimum score in each component of the IELTS academic module, OET or specified alternatives.

From 1 July 2010 practitioners of the Nursing and Midwifery professions across Australia will have to meet the same requirements to be registered and their registration will be recognised in all States and Territories. The Board was established under the Health Practitioner Regulation (administrative arrangements) Act, 2009. From 1 July 2010 the Board will operate with its full range of functions under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (the national law) where adopted in a jurisdiction.

Changes to the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

Which occupations will be listed on the new SOL?

Skills Australia will identify skilled occupations of high value to the economy that align with the broader national workforce development strategy. The SOL is expected to include professional, managerial, technical and trade occupations.
